Metric vs imperial in brief

How conversion factors work

A conversion factor is a fixed multiplier that links one unit to another. Since 1 mile is exactly 1.60934 kilometres, you turn any distance in miles into kilometres by multiplying by 1.60934, and you go back with 0.621371.

Each pairing has its own factor: 0.3048 for feet to metres, 2.20462 for kilograms to pounds, 0.453592 for pounds to kilograms, 3.78541 for US gallons to litres, and 0.264172 for litres to US gallons. The converter stores these so you do not have to remember them.

How conversion works

converted value = original value × conversion factor

Every unit conversion is just multiplication by a single fixed number called the conversion factor. For example, because 1 inch equals 2.54 centimetres, you multiply any number of inches by 2.54 to get centimetres.

To convert in the opposite direction you use the reciprocal factor. Centimetres back to inches, or kilometres back to miles (0.621371), simply uses the matching factor in the other column. The math never changes, only the factor does.
