How to use the temperature converter

What this converter does

The three scales in brief
Celsius is built around water: 0°C is its freezing point and 100°C is its boiling point at sea level, which makes it intuitive for weather and cooking. It is the everyday scale across most of the world. Fahrenheit splits the same range more finely and remains the common scale in the United States, so 0°F is bitterly cold and 100°F is a hot day.
Kelvin is the scientific, absolute scale. It starts at absolute zero — the coldest anything can be — and uses the same step size as Celsius, just shifted by 273.15. Because it has no negative numbers, it is the standard for physics and chemistry.
How to convert by hand
To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 (that is 1.8) and add 32. To go the other way, subtract 32 first, then multiply by 5/9. The order matters: in each direction the multiply and the add or subtract are reversed, which is the most common mistake people make.
Kelvin is the easiest of all — just add 273.15 to a Celsius value to get Kelvin, or subtract 273.15 to go back. To convert Fahrenheit to Kelvin, first turn it into Celsius, then add 273.15.
Everyday uses
Most people reach for a converter for weather and travel, translating a forecast into the scale they grew up with, and for cooking, where oven temperatures and recipes often arrive in the "wrong" scale. A normal body temperature is about 37°C or 98.6°F, so the tool is also useful for reading a thermometer or judging a fever.
In science and study, Kelvin is required for gas laws and many formulas, so converting a measured Celsius or Fahrenheit reading into Kelvin is a routine first step. Whatever the reason, the math is the same — this tool just removes the chance of slipping up.
Conversion formulas
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 · K = °C + 273.15
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 converts Celsius to Fahrenheit: scale up by 9/5, then shift by 32.
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 reverses it: remove the 32 offset first, then scale down by 5/9.
K = °C + 273.15 converts Celsius to Kelvin by adding the offset to absolute zero; subtract 273.15 to go back.
