Kfz-Steuer-Rechner (Germany)
Estimate the annual German motor-vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer) for a passenger car. Enter the engine displacement and CO₂ emissions and choose petrol or diesel — the calculator combines the displacement charge and the CO₂ component, and shows the exemption for battery-electric cars.
Estimate of annual Kfz-Steuer for passenger cars (§9 KraftStG, 2026); the Hauptzollamt's assessment is authoritative.
Frequently asked questions
How is German car tax calculated?+
It is the displacement charge plus a CO₂ charge. Petrol cars pay €2.00 and diesel cars €9.50 per started 100 cm³, plus a tiered CO₂ charge on emissions above 95 g/km (for cars registered from 2021). A 1.6-litre petrol car emitting 120 g/km pays about €83 a year.
Why is a 1,598 cm³ engine taxed as 1,600 cm³?+
Displacement is taxed per started 100 cm³, so any part of a 100 cm³ block counts as a full unit — 1,598 cm³ counts as 16 units, not 15.
Do electric cars pay road tax?+
Pure battery-electric cars registered by 31 December 2030 are exempt for up to 10 years (no later than 2035). Plug-in hybrids are not exempt and are taxed like combustion cars.
