What is the 2026 tax-free allowance?+
The 2026 Grundfreibetrag is €12,348 — income up to that amount is taxed at 0% (it was €12,096 in 2025). The top 42% rate starts at €69,879.
Who pays the solidarity surcharge?+
The 5.5% Solidaritätszuschlag only applies once your assessed income tax exceeds €20,350 (single), so most ordinary employees pay little or no Soli. Church tax (8% in Bavaria/Baden-Württemberg, 9% elsewhere) is optional and only if you are a member.
