How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill — Type the bill amount before tip, exactly as it appears on your check. You can include cents if you want a precise result.
- Choose a tip percentage — Set the tip percentage you want to leave. If you are unsure, 15-20% is a common starting point in the US.
- Set the number of people — Enter how many people are sharing the bill. Leave it at 1 if you are paying on your own.
- Read the results — The calculator shows the tip amount, the total including tip, and how much each person owes when the bill is split.
What this calculator does
This tool turns a restaurant check into clear numbers. You enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and say how many people are sharing the cost. It then shows you the tip amount, the full total including the tip, and the amount each person needs to pay.
It is meant to take the mental math out of the moment when the check arrives. Instead of estimating in your head or passing a phone around the table, you get the same dollar figures everyone can agree on in a few seconds.
Typical tipping percentages
In the United States, a tip of roughly 15-20% of the bill is normal for sit-down service. Many people use 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more when the service is excellent. These are conventions, not rules, so you can adjust up or down based on your experience.
Tipping customs vary a lot by country, so a US habit does not travel everywhere. In much of Europe and in Brazil, a service charge is often already included in the bill, and any additional tip tends to be small or simply optional. When you are abroad, it helps to check whether service is included before adding more, and to treat the percentages above as a US guideline rather than a worldwide standard.
How splitting the bill works
Splitting is straightforward: the calculator first adds the tip to the bill to get the total, then divides that total evenly by the number of people. So everyone pays an equal share of both the food and the tip, not just the food.
This works best when the group is sharing roughly equally. If a few people ordered far more than others, you may prefer to split the bill into separate amounts and tip on each one. For a typical shared meal, though, dividing the single total by the number of people keeps things simple and fair.
The formula behind the numbers
tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100 · per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people
tip is the gratuity amount, found by multiplying the bill by the tip percentage and dividing by 100.
The total is simply the bill plus the tip.
per person divides that total by the number of people sharing the check, so each share covers both food and tip.
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 |
